What Is Long COVID, and Why Won't It Go Away?

Long COVID (also called Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, or PASC) is what happens when COVID symptoms persist weeks, months, or even years after the initial infection. The virus clears. But your body doesn't go back to normal.

An estimated 65 million people worldwide are affected by Long COVID. That number continues to grow. If you're reading this, you're likely one of them.

You might have been perfectly healthy before COVID. Active. Working. Exercising. Then you got sick, and everything changed. You expected to bounce back in a couple of weeks. Instead, you're still dealing with symptoms that won't let up.

Why Your Doctor Can't Fix This (Yet)

Your doctor isn't wrong. They're just limited by the tools they have.

You've probably been through this cycle already. Blood work comes back "normal." Imaging is clear. Your doctor tells you to rest, give it time, or try an antidepressant. Maybe they referred you to a specialist, and you got the same answer from a different waiting room.

This isn't because your symptoms aren't real. It's because nervous system dysregulation doesn't show up on standard tests. Your MRI won't flag a nervous system stuck in overdrive. Your blood panel won't explain why you crash after a 10-minute walk. These are real, measurable physiological changes. Medicine just hasn't caught up with the tools to detect them routinely.

The result? You're left feeling like you're making it up. Or worse, being told to "learn to live with it."

Too many people are told to "learn to live with it" when their symptoms don't fit neatly into existing diagnostic categories. But living with it isn't the only option. When the nervous system pattern driving the symptoms is addressed directly, recovery becomes possible.

The Institute of Medicine (now National Academy of Medicine) concluded in their landmark 2015 report that ME/CFS and related post-viral conditions are "a serious, chronic, complex, systemic disease" frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed. IOM Report, 2015

How COVID Locked Your Nervous System in Overdrive

To understand why you're still sick, you need to understand what happened inside your body during and after COVID. It's simpler than you'd think.

  1. You got COVID. Your immune system launched a massive stress response. Inflammation surged. Your autonomic nervous system went into full "threat mode." This was the right response. Your body was protecting you.
  2. The virus cleared. But the stress response didn't fully shut off. Your nervous system learned that "high alert" was the new normal. It got stuck in a protective state, even after the danger passed.
  3. Your nervous system learned to stay in overdrive. Every signal from your body got amplified. Fatigue. Pain. Heart rate spikes. Brain fog. Your body wasn't broken. It was stuck in a loop, over-responding to normal activity.
  4. Every symptom reinforced the loop. You felt exhausted, so you worried. The worry added more stress. More stress ramped up the symptoms. The cycle fed itself, and rest alone couldn't break it.

This is why you have good days followed by bad weeks. This is why rest doesn't restore you the way it should. This is why you can feel fine in the morning and be completely wiped out by noon.

Post-exertional malaise (PEM), one of the most debilitating Long COVID symptoms, makes sense through this lens. Your nervous system is already maxed out. Any additional demand, physical or mental, pushes it past its threshold. The "crash" isn't your body failing. It's your nervous system slamming the brakes because it thinks you're in danger.

No. Long COVID is not a permanent condition. Research shows that the nervous system can change and adapt through neuroplasticity. Many people recover fully, including hundreds of clients in our recovery system. Recovery timelines vary, but the pattern of improvement is well-documented across thousands of cases. Your nervous system may be stuck in a protective state, and it can be retrained.

Recovery timelines vary from person to person. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within weeks. Others take several months. Factors include how long you've been sick, your severity level, and how consistently you apply the nervous system retraining protocols.
